ABOUT WE DID IT FOR YOU!

There was a time when women couldn’t have jobs and had no voting rights. Women were property passed from father to husband. High-school student Melanie must learn how things changed.

Did It For You! is a quick tour through the journey that women have taken to get rights in the United States, starting with the struggle women had in the 17th century Puritan Revolution through to our 21st century empowered women politicians. The play focuses on the stories of just some of the women who believed they deserved more than being treated as minors and being extensions of men.

The few women portrayed in the play are not the whole story. Women have not only struggled to obtain their rights, they have made contributions that have been overlooked in many history books. In so many areas, women have been the first to accomplish things, have ideas, create inventions, and solve problems.

“The play is one of the most entertaining and interesting re-enactments of the history of women I have seen to date. It is so well put together that it easily captures the interests of all age groups-especially our younger generation ...who need to know where we have been in order to see the potential of where we can go when we work together!” - Amy Lance, California State University, Chico

“The performance was so outstanding and moving that I got goose bumps and cried." - Lilly Ledbetter, Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Act, the first act of legislation signed by President Obama

The lessons learned here apply to both genders and all ages and can be applied to contemporary issues, making them as relevant today as they were 100 or more years ago. - Mitzi March Mogul, Vice President, Heritage Square Museum

Hard Times Require Furious Dance, Natick, MA

13 Common Street
Natick, MA
Price: $20 Donation

Alice Walker wrote a book called "Hard Times Require Furious Dancing." She and her family rented a hall to dance and shake their significant blues and depression away. It was mighty effective. Her book of poems is about just that.

A group of us who love to dance, decided we need space and time for furious dancing. This evening will be filled with world music and beats and some popular tunes too. We'll share poetry, dance furiously, raise the collective vibration, come into our own power, and explore what it is we're choosing to manifest as we move forward.

We'll begin at 7:30 as we are guided through some simple yoga warm ups to lead us into an 8:00 pm start time for dancing. We'll then dance to world grooves, funky beats, popular tunes, and some oldies but goodies. This is a time of free-flow-let-it-go exploration and expression.

Suggested donation: $20.

5 Featured Performers:

CAROLYN WATERS

Socially conscious soul…a singer/songwriter whose easy, natural style communicates immediately with your heart…her powerful, compelling voice sweeps you away. Check it all out on her great website

STEVE GILLIGAN

Steve may be best known as the bass player for the famed Stompers for the last 40 years, also playing with the Kenny Selcer Band, Blame the Whiskey & Swamp Yankees, and folk trio City of Roses, but his secret weapon is as a solo performer/songwriter/singer. He has 3 fabulous CDs, “Jacob’s Well,” “Winter Rain” and “Dog Patch Garage” available places such as cdbaby, iheartradio, apple music, cd universe and others.

WOODY CARPINELLA

Woody has been playing since the Beatles released Help! He’s played guitar in bands since grammar school – rock & roll, blues, country, jazz, folk and some stuff that defies classification. He played professionally for 15 years in the 70’s and 80’s, and now that the family has been raised, he’s back in the saddle. Lately he’s done pit work for several community theatre projects, performed solo, and backed Jane Fallon, Carolyn Waters (hey!), Wendy Wolfberg, Ellen Schmidt and Paul Beck, among others, and is currently working with the talented Florie Namir. Check him out. You’ll be amused if not confused, infatuated and saturated, and amazed and dazed. In short, he ain’t like all the other boys and girls.

PJ ROGUE

PJ has delighted audiences for over 30 years with his unique combination of eclectic originals and covers. An award winning songwriter, he was recently voted a finalist in the 2015 RISA performing songwriter competition. Over the years he has opened for the likes of John Gorka, Lui Collins, Cheryl Wheeler, Vance Gilbert, Fred Small and David Mallet, among others. PJ’s songs have been covered by a number of other area musicians as well. He released his first full length collection of songs in September 2014, available on cdbaby and other places.

JAMIE SHALER

Oh yeah, him. Jamie’s career as a songwriter/singer/guitarist/band leader spans more than 40 years. Best known for the 80’s and 90’s bands Angry Young Bees and Jamie Shaler On Vacation, Jamie has played all over New England, headlining and opening for the likes of David Clayton Thomas, Robin Trower, the English band 999, David Johansen, Tommy Keene, the Neighborhoods, the Stompers (hey!), Berlin Airlift, Robin Lane, Jon Butcher, The Fools and Down Avenue. After releasing a number of 45’s with the Bees, an album with On Vacation, a full-length CD with Thunder Monkeys, and a quite unusual Christmas CD, “Christmas Chills,” from which there are many YouTube videos that have garnered over 66000 views (He also has another 40 or 50 videos from the Bees, Vacation and his current solo act on YouTube) he released his first solo CD, “Scars, Guitars, & Tranquilizers,” in 2013, available on Amazon, and iTunes. His website is http://jamieandchris.com/

*****Performing at WUMB Gala featuring Judy Collins and Tom Rush*****
WUMB Gala - UMass Boston Campus Center Ballroom

I will do a couple of numbers at the WUMB Gala which features  Judy Collins and Tom Rush on August 11th at the UMass Boston Campus Center Ballroom.  Please see details below and I really hope that you will consider coming out and supporting a very good cause!

Two luminaries of the music world will be on hand to assist in the launch of WUMB's new $7 million Capital Campaign*, in an intimate event on August 11th. Join us for a memorable evening of fine dining and exquisite music at the UMass Boston Campus Center Ballroom, with performances by Judy Collins and Tom Rush. Kenny White also performs and there will be a special Raffle.

Judy Collins

Multiple grammy award-winner Judy Collins has thrilled audiences worldwide with her unique blend of interpretative folksongs and contemporary themes. Her impressive career has spanned more than 40 years. At 13, Judy Collins made her public debut performing Mozart's "Concerto for Two Pianos" but it was the music of such artists as Woody Guthrie and Pete Seeger, as well as the traditional songs of the folk revival, that sparked Judy Collins' love of lyrics. She soon moved away from the classical piano and began her lifelong love with the guitar. In 1961, Judy Collins released her first album, A Maid of Constant Sorrow, at the age of 22. In addition to dozens of albums and CD's she has written several books and is about to come out with a new CD and a children's book this summer.

Tom Rush

Tom Rush's impact on the American music scene has been profound. He helped shape the folk revival in the '60s and the renaissance of the '80s and '90s, his music having left its stamp on generations of artists. James Taylor told Rolling Stone, "Tom was not only one of my early heroes, but also one of my main influences." Country music star Garth Brooks has credited Rush with being one of his top five musical influences. Rush has long championed emerging artists. His early recordings introduced the world to the work of Joni Mitchell, Jackson Browne and James Taylor. Tom's distinctive guitar style, wry humor and warm, expressive voice have made him both a legend and a lure to audiences around the world. His shows are filled with the rib-aching laughter of terrific story-telling, the sweet melancholy of ballads and the passion of gritty blues. Tom also has released about two dozen albums and CD's, including his first studio album in over 30 years which was  released last year.

 Kenny White

A fixture in the NY studio scene, Kenny White wrote and produced hundreds of commercials for TV and radio, and has worked with artists like Gladys Knight, Linda Ronstadt, Dwight Yoakam, Ricky Skaggs and Aaron Neville. He produced Shawn Colvin Grammy-nominated, “I Don’t Know Why” as well as three records for Peter Wolf. After being hailed by reviewers from the NY Times to the SF Chronicle for his thrilling and unique piano playing, he made his first album in 2002. He’s opened shows for Cheryl Wheeler, Shawn Colvin, Peter Wolf, Richard Shindell and Jonathan Edwards, quickly gaining a reputation as a ‘dazzling’ and ‘not-to-be-missed’ performer.
