Our Days

Just my thoughts on the devastation that war reaps upon those who are sent to fight them and on those who stay behind.

He’s gone my soldier
Bang the drum slower
Memories smolder
Our days are over
Memories dangle gently/lightly on my wrist
One charm of faith that he gave me with a kiss
One charm a promise and a tiny diamond ring
The next charm his heart, many spaces left for other things
On a summer day I wore his favorite flowing dress
Low cut, revealing skin he slowly caressed
Making love underneath the bluest, clearest sky
Future clear, my soldier near, never thinking goodbye
He’s gone my soldier
Bang the drum slower
Memories smolder
Our days are over
One year, 3 months, six days until his return
Through letters saved and video waves, our love just burned
He was there to get somewhere, make it safer for his kin
Strong and stout I had no doubt that he’d make it home again
On a winter’s day I wore his favorite flowing dress
Out of place, low cut, revealing skin he slowly caressed
Memories flood of making love under the bluest, clearest skies
We’re huddled here, very near, telling our soldier good-bye
He’s gone my soldier
Bang the drum slower
Memories smolder
Our days are over
