- SAMW (Summer Acoustic Music Week)
- Sponsored by WUMB Radio in Boston
Musically, nothing has been more life changing for me than the time I've spent at SAMW. It's billed as "a week of instruction in voice, song-writing, fingerstyle and flatpicking guitar, blues styles, banjo, fiddle, dulcimer, sound reinforcement, music theory & singing and more. " It's the more that keeps me and so many others coming back year after year. It's the world class instructors who take the time to teach, listen and guide; it's the talented campers who support your growth and serve as role models as they achieve new heights year after year; it's the true feeling of community which expands beyond the 'walls' of camp and it's those friendships and bonds you develop that will last a lifetime that make up the 'more'. It's also held each year on a campus on the shore of Lake Winnipesaukee, which ain't so bad either! If you are a developing, or even a seasoned musician, and have never experienced SAMW, come on down, it will definitely be worth your while.
- Acoustic Music TV
- Produced and Directed by Bruce Jones
I've had the privilege to work with Bruce on two projects for his Acoustic Music TV Series. First, the incredibly talented Doc Murdock and I had the opportunity of accompanying Bo Veaner as he performed several of his wonderful original songs in the kick-off of the Acoustic Music TV Series. And second, I was honored as Bruce documented my journey of creating a song 'You've Got To Change' from start (a idea that came to me on the way to lunch) to finish (performing the finished piece for one of the first times with the help of Chris Gerstner, Charlie & Charlotte Koch and Claude Galinsky). Log on and stay to enjoy performances from other SAMW alum including Mike Delaney, Beth DeSombre and more.....
- Network for Women's Lives
- The Network for Women's Lives is a volunteer organization dedicated to ending domestic violence and promoting healthy relationships serving the communities of Acton, Bedford, Boxborough, Carlisle, Concord, Lexington, Lincoln, Maynard and Stow. I initially became involved with this wonderful group through one of their annual fund raising efforts - a benefit production of the V - Monologues. As I learned more of their critically important work with some of our states most vulnerable, I wanted to do more. Over the years I have performed at a number of their fundraising events and in 2006 put together an EP called 'Awakenings' to be given out in exchange for donations to the Network. I was and am very proud of this project, which included a cover of Kate Campbell's 'Signs Following', an emotional accounting of a nearly fatal case of domestic violence which took place in Sand Mountain, Alabama. While this EP is no longer available, I would encourage anyone looking for a great cause to support to check out the Network thru the link above.
- Parent Rapsody
- The No Bad Kids Band
Several years ago I was asked to take part in a recording project centered on helping troubled kids take control and manage their behavior via gentle reminders and cues put to rhythmic rap and song. This project was the brain child and creation of Charlie Appelstein, a childcare specialist with over 25 years of experience in the field of child welfare. A frequent guest on the New England Cable News (NECN) channel where he offers parenting tips, Charlie is regarded as one the best child welfare trainers in the United States.
The finished project, ‘One Line Raps for Girls and Chaps’ by Charlie Appelstein and the No Bad Kids Band is a CD that I am extremely proud of and while the target audience was initially troubled kids and teens, there is a message here for all kids, of all ages. My own nieces and nephews love “Aunt Carol’s” CD. Check out a few samples from the CD on my music page.
Also, available from Charlie Appelstein and The No Bad Kids Band, ‘Parent Rapsody: Songs and Musical Mantras for Successful Parenting.’ Joining the band for this creation are a host of extremely talented performers from the SAMW community including 'Sir' Charles Williams, Doc Murdock, Hope Swift and many others.
Both CD’s are available for purchase thru this website.
